Almost Ordinary
There comes a curious point in every young company where extraordinary slowly starts pretending to be ordinary. Meetings refuse to become routines, while Documents become versions. Introductions become collaborations and the impossible relief quietly turns into next Tuesday.
Perhaps that's how companies grow, through enough ordinary days spent doing extraordinary things. We're not quite there yet but for the first time in a while it feels close.
Structure
One of the recurring themes of these updates has been structure.
The picture today is considerably simpler than it was only a few months ago.
The remaining work is no longer about discovering the right direction.
It's about finishing the current chapter properly to offset the starting orientation.
There is something strangely satisfying about replacing uncertainty with checklists.
Regulatory
Time for a proper commitment. After considerable discussion, we've now established a final internal deadline for completing the current accounting: End of August.
No extensions. No moving targets. No "next week."
The Companies House late filing penalty remains entirely acceptable within the wider context of the structural transition currently underway. The integrity of the company's books remains significantly more valuable than avoiding a comparatively minor administrative fee. Sometimes the cheapest decision is not the most economical one.
We'd rather publish accounts that reflect reality than rush accounts that immediately require explaining.
The objective remains wonderfully boring:

Grant-Tracks
Momentum continues building quietly across our collaborative programmes.
This week further reinforced something we've suspected for a while:
The quality of conversations continues improving faster than the quantity.
The joint planning sessions with the University of Birmingham and the Manufacturing Technology Centre remain a major milestone dragging into the next weeks to agree on more details, bringing together our longer-term R&D direction, KTP ambitions and collaborative roadmap extending through 2027.
Roadmaps are useful. Shared roadmaps are considerably better.
Product
Discussions increasingly revolve around manufacturing readiness, validation, production environments and pilot deployment rather than hypothetical capability. We are currently looking at a first base for productions-scaling in the US with a renowned incubator, revealed shortly.
That is exactly where we hoped to be. Synthetic crystal production continues forming the foundation so applications can continue emerging from the material.
Not the other way around.
Research & Development
Research continues doing what good research should do. Quietly improving engineering. Our review paper continues evolving alongside the product, informed by both foundational and contemporary work across technologies, synthetic systems and energy harvesting architectures. Knowledge compounds remarkably well in abstraction.
The process remains exactly as before:
Understand first → Build second → Publish third.
Education
This week marks another step in a direction we intend to keep expanding. Continuous learning is no longer something we simply encourage internally. It is becoming part of how we operate.
We're pleased to share the first completed certification through the United Nations University – Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability, beginning with "Net Zero 101". Embedding ourselves within internationally recognised expertise, sustainability frameworks and interdisciplinary research is exactly the sort of long-term capability we want KCM to accumulate. This won't be the last.
Throughout the remainder of the year we expect to complete further programmes across sustainability, innovation, technology and international development. We’'ll happily share each milestone as it arrives.
Expertise ages surprisingly well.
Ecosystem
One of the pleasant surprises of recent months has been discovering just how interconnected innovation ecosystems really are.
Conversations following the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting of the New Champions continue creating valuable follow-up opportunities, while developments across the wider advanced manufacturing community continue reinforcing our conviction that industrial progress is increasingly collaborative.
Operations
Processes increasingly have owners, Meetings increasingly have outcomes, People increasingly know who is responsible for what. It sounds wonderfully ordinary, because it is. Good operations rarely attract attention.
They quietly allow everything else to, which is why we are considering a two week deep-dive before the next release. If there’s no Infoblog next week, there’ll be a more impactful one the week that follows.
Events
Preparations continue for our planned India journey in early August, with the itinerary moving closer to the middle of August as we are expediting the completition of the current sequence first.
Strengthen existing partnerships → Lay the groundwork for pilot activity → Continue building relationships that outlive individual projects.
Outlook
A few months ago these updates often revolved around uncertainty.
Today they increasingly revolve around completion.
That feels like healthy progress with the remaining milestones visible and due.
The route between them is clearer than it has ever been.
Sometimes that's all you need.
